Description

The Valladolid-based company Astibot has developed Trimbot, a mobile robot designed to autonomously prune trellised vineyards. It is one of the first solutions in this field, combining artificial intelligence systems, computer vision, and data analysis to perform this task accurately and repeatably.

Astibot is a Spanish technology startup specializing in advanced robotics and artificial intelligence applied to the agricultural sector. It develops innovative solutions such as autonomous robots for pruning vineyards, with the aim of improving productivity, sustainability, and efficiency on farms.

Main technical features

  • Autonomous pruning: Trimbot can identify branches and buds using artificial vision and decide on the most appropriate cut in each case, adapting to the shape and growth of the vine.
  • Long-term learning: the system records information on each vineyard and each season, allowing pruning decisions to be adjusted and improved year after year.
  • Continuous automation: as it is powered by electricity and operates autonomously, it can work for long hours and in different weather conditions.
  • Sustainability and traceability: each intervention is digitally recorded, making it easy for the winegrower to check what has been done on each plant and analyze the results over time.

The development of Trimbot has been supported by the Center for Industrial Technological Development (CDTI) and is part of efforts to digitize and automate viticulture. Its aim is to respond to current challenges such as seasonal labor shortages, the need to reduce costs, and the drive towards more sustainable and precise agriculture. It can prune continuously, without depending on weather conditions, which significantly reduces the costs and time spent on pruning.

Innovative aspects

First autonomous solution for trellis pruning

  • First robot in the world capable of pruning trellis vineyards without human intervention.

Artificial Intelligence applied to pruning

  • Accurately identifies branches and buds.
  • Decides on the optimal cut in real time.
  • Adapts to the structure and growth of each vine.

Big Data for continuous improvement

  • Memorizes and analyzes each vineyard year after year.
  • Customizes cuts according to the history of each plant.

Sustainable and efficient automation

  • 100% electric and low emissions.
  • Works continuously, even in adverse conditions.
  • Reduces dependence on seasonal labor.

Direct impact on production

  • Selective pruning that optimizes the quantity and quality of the grapes.
  • Healthier management of each vine.

Precision agriculture with full traceability

  • Enables more informed management decisions.
  • Digitally records each intervention.
  • Facilitates medium- and long-term analysis.

Pilot Deployments

Trimbot has recently been successfully tested in the Familia Torres vineyards in Ribera del Duero, demonstrating its ability to adapt to different conditions and needs in the wine industry.
